Heavy Gauge Coil Slitting
Precision Slitting for the Toughest Materials
Heavy gauge slitting is a highly controlled process designed to cut thicker steel master coils- typically over 0.20” thickness - into narrower strips while maintaining width tolerances and consistent edge quality. The process begins by loading the master coil onto an uncoiler and processing it through slitter knives that have been precisely spaced to ensure the customer’s quality. These rotary knives shear the steel lengthwise with the proper pressure to prevent stress fractures, manage camber, and prevent edge burrs.
At Siegal Steel, we meet that challenge with our Braner turret-head slitting line, built to handle both the power and precision that heavy gauge steel requires. It can process coils up to 0.312” thick, and it’s backed by a team that knows how to get the most out of every coil. We process hard-to-source alloy steel grades, such as 10B38 and 4130, alongside other grades like HSLA, medium carbon, and low carbon steel —all with the same goal of delivering tight, uniform coils that are ready for stamping or forming applications.

Benefits of Heavy Gauge Slitting
Siegal Steel’s heavy gauge slitting process is designed to reduce edge variation and shape distortion, providing reliable, consistent cuts delivered on schedule.
- Consistent Performance on Hard-to-Source Alloys
Materials like 10B38 and 4130 require specific knowledge and tooling. We’re one of the few processors equipped to slit them reliably. - Tighter Tolerances, Less Waste
Clean cuts and uniform coils reduce scrap and improve yield. - Quick Turnaround, Reliable Scheduling
Our slitting lines and inventory programs are built for agility—supporting tight deadlines and Kanban systems.
Why Choose Siegal Steel for Heavy Gauge Slitting?
Successful heavy gauge slitting starts with experienced operators who understand how to set up and run a line for each material’s specific demands. At Siegal Steel, our team brings deep, hands-on experience working with challenging grades and tight tolerances. They know how to deviate from coil to coil and make the exact adjustments to achieve high quality results you can expect time after time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does heavy gauge slitting differ from narrow or standard slitting?
While narrow slitting often deals with thinner gauges and tighter widths, heavy gauge slitting occurs with thicker material that demands significantly more cutting force and structural support to maintain edge quality and straightness.
What problems can heavy gauge slitting uniquely solve?
Heavy gauge slitting helps manufacturers eliminate rework caused by burrs or camber, improves press feeding, and reduces downtime.
